Thank you, Goddess! Thank you everyone who has sent me their positive wishes for finding a house!

I have found a place to live.

I'm very excited about my new home. It's not the beach house I wished for, but, as always, the Universe knows best what I need right now.

I spent the last three months responding to every suitable ad that I saw and even put a couple of my own "desperately seeking" ads. I put the word out to everyone that I knew that I was searching for accommodation. All to no avail. I never even got to the viewing stage.

Then, one day last week, I was sitting in front of my computer talking to my daughter, telling her not to worry and to trust that the Universe will provide and that I had a feeling something was going to happen today, when an email came in. It was an alert I had set for a local classifieds site. The minute I read the message, I knew this was the place for us. I phoned up immediately and we went to view the place 2 hours later.

As I walked in, I just "knew" this house was for me. The landlord walked us through the two living rooms, four huge bedrooms, an oversized kitchen with attached utility room, three bathrooms and a study, before showing us, nearly as an afterthought, what he called the children's playroom. This room is a gorgeous wood-clad attic room with skylights and just screams "meditation, sacred space, etc.". And then I knew why this house was for me.

In the previous two weeks the Universe had been shouting. I received quite a few requests for Reiki and spiritual counselling. Many people also phoned me asking if I knew of a spiritual centre in the Seychelles. There isn't anything like that here. YET.

I've also been pretty broke the last couple of years and just last week I finally sold a piece of land that has given me some financial resources, without which I would never have been able to afford this kind of house.

It's long been a dream of mine to start some sort of spiritual centre here. Long-term, I'd like to live and work in a spiritual retreat centre and have made plans for a cafe where like-minded people could meet.

For a long time now, I've been responding to people who have asked for help that I don't have the space or resources to do anything in that vein. I did help in "smaller" ways, but didn't feel ready for more. Now I have enough resources for the first step; a house where I could start up something in the spiritual area. The Universe has provided and I no longer have an excuse to avoid doing what I'm supposed to be doing...

I mentioned in a previous post that I had been through some dark nights of the soul in the last two years. This time around, when it came to trusting that I would have a roof over my head, I trusted. Completely and totally. I put myself into the hands of the powers that be and let go. When I wavered slightly (ever so slightly), I wrote a post about my worries and received so much encouragement from you. Asking for help was definitely a first for me; I have always found it easy to sense when others needed help and gave it freely. Asking for help for myself was another matter altogether; pride all too easily got in the way of that.

I am over the moon with happiness.

I am filled with joy.

I am overflowing with gratitude.

From the bottom of my heart: Thank you.

One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish.

About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working harder to make a living for himself and his family. "You aren't going to catch many fish that way," said the businessman to the fisherman. "You should be working rather than lying on the beach!"

The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and replied, "And what will my reward be?" "Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!" was the businessman's answer. "And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman, still smiling. The businessman replied, "You will make money and you'll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!" "And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman again. The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman's questions. "You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!" he said.

"And then what will my reward be?" repeated the fisherman. The businessman was getting angry. "Don't you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!" Once again the fisherman asked, "And then what will my reward be?" The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, "Don't you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won't have a care in the world!"

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, "And what do you think I'm doing right now?"

What Dance Are You?

Wednesday, July 23, 2008 | | 3 comments »

That's me alright :-)

You Are Disco Dancing

You are very energetic and lively. You could dance all night.

Fun loving and social, you like dancing best when everyone in the room is dancing.

You love to dance to anything, and it's hard to stop once you start.

You love dancing in a crowd. And no matter how big the crowd, all eyes are usually on you.

This is a lovely Sufi story from The Way of the Sufi by Idries Shah.

A powerful king, ruler of many domains, was in a position of such magnificence that wise men were his mere employees. And yet one day he felt himself confused and called the sages to him.
He said: 'I do not know the cause, but something impels me to seek a certain ring, one that will enable me to stabilize my state. 'I must have such a ring. And this ring must be one which, when I am unhappy, will make me joyful. At the same time, if I am happy and look upon it, I must be made sad.'
The wise men consulted one another, and threw themselves into deep contemplation, and finally they came to a decision as to the character of this ring which would suit their king.
The ring which they devised was one upon which was inscribed the legend:

This, too, shall pass.

I've often heard the phrase "This, too, shall pass." as advice when things are rough, but this story emphasizes that happiness, too, shall pass.

It seems to me that it highlights the importance of detachment and letting go. What do you think?

Steve Pavlina suggest to "prove to the universe that you're willing to receive the small package with love and gratitude, and bigger opportunities will soon follow" in his article How to Earn Your First Love Dollar. It's an intriguing idea and I'm going to try it.

Many seekers on the road to higher consciousness will pass through the Dark Night of the Soul. This is a good indepth description of what to expect.

I’ve moved house five times in the last two years.

My kids and I are about to embark on the sixth move.

The first time, I had to make up my mind and switch countries from Switzerland to Seychelles within three weeks. I stayed at a friend’s home for a month and then moved to my own place. This was a horrible dingy little house in the middle of the bush. After 4 months, I was given a month’s notice by my landlady and found a bedsit to share with my two teenage children just two days before I had to move. The place was small, but nonetheless a step up from the previous shack. (We had luxuries such as hot water and proper tiles.) The story repeated itself, but this time I had just one day to move out. The house was larger, but started falling apart on us due to termites attacking the wood. This enabled rats to get in and we had to move out before we all died of leptospirosis...

I’ve been in this house for 10 months now, which is a pretty long time considering the track record of the last couple of years. The house is once again an improvement on the previous accommodation; we have three bedrooms, two bathrooms and unlimited hot water. Not to forget a fantastic view. My landlord now wants to tear the house down to build luxury condominiums and is going to start work on the site by the end of this month. So, once again I’m on the move.

To make matters worse, it’s becoming nearly impossible to find any kind of rental. The prices have shot up in these last few years and there is a huge shortage of accommodation even in the higher priced category.

So what do I do facing these impossible circumstances? I ask the Universe for the absolutely impossible: a house on the beach.

I’ve been yearning for a house on the beach before I even got here. Upon arrival I “realized” that there are only a handful of beach houses for rent and their prices are exorbitant, so I gave up on the idea, thinking it was impossible. Of course, with this attitude, my first home was miles away from the beach. Looking back over the last two years, each move has been an improvement and I’m getting closer to the beach as well. It no longer feels impossible.

These last couple of years have truly been an exercise in trust. I had quite a few dark nights of the soul where I lost faith and had to find a point where I regained trust despite the seemingly hopeless outlook of the situation. Each time I managed to dredge hope from the depths of my soul, the tide turned and a roof over my head was provided by the Universe.

Last month an online friend sent me a lovely link where one can wish upon a star. Without stopping to think, I spontaneously wished for a beach house. On a few blogs I visit, I stated my dream of living in a beach house and writing a novel. I’ve looked at my vision board on my desktop, built myself a beach house on Sims2 and starting visualizing.

Meanwhile, in the “real world”, I’ve placed an ad seeking accommodation, looked at a couple of places (not on the beach), but they haven’t worked out. I’ve got two weeks to go until I have to move out and I’m working on not feeling the fear and trusting that I will have a roof over my head.

I live in hope and surrender…

Are You a Risk Taker?

Wednesday, July 09, 2008 | | 4 comments »

Hmm... and I thought I was a total risk taker. Must have been that bungee jumping question...

Your Risk Taking Level: Medium-High

You're not afraid of a little (or a lot) of risk.

In fact, you pretty much live to take chances.

Consequences be damned, you are willing to go for it.

And if it doesn't work out, at least people can't say you didn't try!

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

There’s nothing better than a seaside holiday to regenerate both your body and your soul. Not everyone is lucky enough to live by the ocean, but there are ways you can fake it in your bathroom and still reap the benefits.

To get into the mood of a seaside vacation, decorate your bathroom with aquatic colours and accessories. If you have a blue or turquoise bathroom, all the better. Add some shells, a couple of candles, a couple of blue bottles or maybe even a mini Zen garden and aim for a serene look. This does mean getting rid of rubber duckies and ten different brands of shampoo hanging around place. A polluted beach is not relaxing.

Run a moderately warm bath and add a couple of handfuls of sea salt to it. This doesn‘t have to be fancy Dead Sea salt; any sea salt available in supermarkets will do the trick just fine. (It helps to dissolve the salt crystals in really hot water first.) It’s important for your circulation not to run a too hot bath. I love hot baths and once made the mistake of adding sea salt to a piping hot bath. I collapsed when I got out. Luckily, the bathroom was big enough and I just ended up on the floor without knocking my head against anything. Or did I …

Whilst the bath is running, light some candles and put on some music. An ocean sounds CD would be ideal, but any soothing music will do in a pinch. Rub some coconut oil into your skin much as you would massage in suntan lotion at the beach. The warmth of the bath will help your skin really absorb the oil as well as the minerals from the salt.

Now get in the bath and do what you would do on the beach. Read a book if you like. Just relax and let your senses be overwhelmed by the warm water, the candles and the colours. Close your eyes and breathe slowly in and out, inhaling the soft scent of the salty air and imagine yourself floating in the ocean.

If you’re feeling creative, you could write in your journal. Or visualize your ideal day. Relax and dream.

Your bathtub is an ideal place to meditate, too. Whilst lying in the bath, try chanting a mantra. Treat your bathroom as sacred space, a place for you to retreat to and regenerate.

Stay in the bath whilst letting the water run out. (Unless, like my son, you have childhood memories of imagining yourself being sucked down the drain.) Imagine the water carrying away all your worries and problems, down the drain, into the rivers and, eventually, into the sea.

You see, you’re not that far away from the ocean after all.

What Tarot Card Are You?

Wednesday, July 02, 2008 | | 6 comments »

I like the "surrender to a higher power" bit. The rest of it sounds like I'm an obsessive. Which, in a way, I suppose I am...

You are The Lovers

Motive, power, and action, arising from Inspiration and Impulse.

The Lovers represents intuition and inspiration. Very often a choice needs to be made.

Originally, this card was called just LOVE. And that's actually more apt than "Lovers." Love follows in this sequence of growth and maturity. And, coming after the Emperor, who is about control, it is a radical change in perspective. LOVE is a force that makes you choose and decide for reasons you often can't understand; it makes you surrender control to a higher power. And that is what this card is all about. Finding something or someone who is so much a part of yourself, so perfectly attuned to you and you to them, that you cannot, dare not resist. This card indicates that the you have or will come across a person, career, challenge or thing that you will fall in love with. You will know instinctively that you must have this, even if it means diverging from your chosen path. No matter the difficulties, without it you will never be complete.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

The other day, my daughter was complaining about what she considered to be unethical behaviour by some of her friends. I responded by sarcastically suggesting that they probably hadn’t watched “Touched by an Angel” in their formative years. She figured it was probably a lack of Dr. Seuss.

And I realised that my daughter was right. Dr. Seuss subtly (or not so subtly some might say) incorporates little nuggets of wisdom into all his books for children. Read Dr. Seuss to your kids and they will be forever “programmed” to strive to be their highest selves. If you haven’t read the man yet, it’s high time to do so yourself. Now available on Gameboy Advance as well.

Here’s some wisdom from Dr. Seuss and a little translation into Personal Growth Speak (PGS).

  1. Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You. In PGS: Be your authentic self.
  2. I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me! In PGS: Overcoming challenges and difficulties are opportunities for personal growth.
  3. Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one. In PGS: Take a positive attitude and live in the moment. And practice your positive affirmations.
  4. You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose. In PGS: Accept personal responsibility in choosing your directions in life. Make your choices consciously.
  5. From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere. In PGS: Be aware of your surroundings and see the humour in everything. Laughter is relaxing and can be enlightening.
  6. And will you succeed? Yes indeed, yes indeed! Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed. In PGS: Believe in your success. Having goals, purpose and dreams will focus your attention and change the condition of your life.
  7. Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the things you can think up if only you try! In PGS: Use lateral thinking to tap into your creativity.
  8. If you want to catch beasts you don't see everyday, You have to out-of-the-way, You have to go places no others can get to. You have to get cold, and you have to get wet, too. In PGS: Get out of your comfort zone.
  9. The more you read, the more you'll know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go. Develop your skills and enrich your mind by buying good books on personal development. Don’t forget the workshops.
  10. Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not. In PGS: Connectedness to other people, other species and the earth rounds us in our lives.
  11. If you never did, you should. These things are fun, and fun is good. In PGS: Get out of your comfort zone
  12. A person's a person, no matter how small. In PGS: Love yourself and respect others. Umm, size doesn’t matter?
If this isn’t enough wisdom for you, go watch a rerun of “Touched by an Angel”…
